The Keys ep14 Election of Latvia’s first parliament
The election took place on 17 and 18 April 1920, only a few months after the Freedom fights. We celebrate the date of the Constitutional Assembly, 1 May, as a national holiday. However, the election campaign was all but noble. In their struggle for power, politicians were just as belligerent as they had been in the war and resorted to methods that we would call shady politics. The recent war and lack of political stability gave rise to using terrorism and assassinations as tools to gain the upper hand.
