The Keys ep16 Adoption of The Declaration of Independence of the Republic of Latvia
The Declaration on the Restoration of the Independence of Latvia was adopted on 4 May 1990. Back then the parliament was divided into two opposing polls – the Popular Front of Latvia and the Interfront. The former was for independence, the latter against it. 134 votes were needed for the motion to pass.
The Popular Front was represented by 131 MPs. It was unclear whether the document would receive the necessary number of votes. However, in the end 138 MPs voted for the declaration. Whom do we thank for creating the Declaration of Independence? Whom do we thank for its adoption? Could things have gone differently?
