The Keys ep22 The 1940 Occupation

In the summer of 1940, the Soviet Union carried out the occupation of the Baltic states and overthrew the Republic of Latvia. The elimination of the state had already been planned a year prior, as part of the Stalin-Hitler’s pact of non-aggression. Already in 1939, Latvia was flooded with Soviet military bases; the events of the following summer that lead to Latvia’s accession to the USSR were inevitable.

In less than two months the country was torn down to its foundation. The following 50 years people were put in prison for speaking of this truth. But what is a country’s foundation? It is its people. The occupants robbed the people. When someone robs you or murders your loved one, you turn to the state for help. But what do you do when the state is both the executioner and robber?
