The Keys ep23 The Nazi occupation of 1941
In the shortest night of 1941, 22 June, began the largest military offensive in the human history, Operation Barbarossa – Nazi Germany’s invasion of the Soviet Union. Latvia was caught in it right away. Over the next few days, Nazis took the territory of Latvia from the Soviet occupiers. Anyone who kicks out your abuser seems to be your friend. Of course, it was not so. An occupier is still an occupier, even if he kicks out the previous occupier. Were there any differences between the two? The approach of both regimes was eerily similar. How is it possible that despite brutal destruction caused in the very first days of war, Latvians greeted Hitler’s forces as liberators? What changed in the lives of ordinary people when Stalin was replaced by Hitler?
