The Keys ep42 Latvian Radio
The first broadcast in Riga was aired on 1 November 1924. Prior to introducing radio to the masses, the first experimental broadcasts were pioneered by engineer Jānis Linters. His initial attempts to bring radio to Latvia did not go smoothly.
In the early years, music made up the bulk of radio aired content. In time it developed into a full-fledged public medium with its original content, growing audience and ethical standards. Following Ulmanis’s coup and subsequent establishment of an authoritarian regime, the radio turned from a source of entertainment into a mouthpiece for the powers that be. Today its history serves as a warning about the dangers of media politicisation.
