The Keys ep45 First Olympic gold
62 years ago, 15 000 km from Latvia, a Latvian conquered the highest peak of sports for the first time, winning our first Olympic gold. The world did not know it yet. The javelin thrower Inese Jaunzeme was believed to be Russian, and the reporters almost missed her final throw in the Melbourne stadium – nobody had heard of her before and did not expect much. But the deciding throw of the ‘unknown Russian’ made the stadium gasp. 53.86 metres – a new Olympic record! We got the gold on 28 November, but in Riga we learned about it only two days later from the newspaper Sports. The newspaper’s staff had intercepted the happy news on 29 November from Moscow, and after telling Inese’s mom first thing, they put it through the night editor for the morning paper. No Latvian journalists were present in Melbourne.
